Dear Parents and Carers,
We are now a few weeks into the new school year so I thought it would be useful to let you know some more details about some of the changes that we have made in school.
We want students to feel that school is a place where they have good relationships with other children and the staff. Effective conversations between children and staff are needed for this to happen and this has been emphasised with all of our staff. By fully understanding the issues raised by our pupils we will be able to make progress together.
I have received lots of positive feedback since the beginning of term from our pupils, staff and parents, that they already feel that there has been a huge difference to their perception of school. The outcome we strive for is that children will be motivated to attend school, will enjoy their lessons and will feel that they can always do their best in their lessons and the extra-curricular clubs and activities that they choose.
The new Care, Support, Guidance and Behaviour Policy aims to build relationships and encourages conversations to take place. We will continue to use praise to encourage children through verbal teacher comments, merit marks, written feedback, communication home or more formal celebration evenings. We will be using merit marks that you can see immediately if you use our School Gateway app on your mobile device.
No child should be disturbed when learning and we expect all our community to respect each other and the site, so we will continue to challenge inappropriate behaviour. The C (for Conversation) system will remain. If a child’s behaviour needs to be challenged, there should be a clear explanation about what they are doing that could be improved. It is also important that parents and carers are more a part of this communication. A conversation with parents/carers will take place beforehand if a detention is required. You will, no doubt, have heard that the ‘First Impressions’ card has been scrapped and the Inclusion room dismantled.
There have been a number of changes to our organisation of assessment and monitoring of teaching. These aim to ensure that there is high quality teaching and children receive the most suitable forms of assessment and effective feedback to help them to make the best progress they can. Our staff also deserve high quality professional development to enable them to be successful in their roles. The leadership team has been reorganised and Dr Fox and Mrs Iles are now our Deputy Headteachers for this academic year.
Our post-Ofsted Action plan addresses the areas that were highlighted in the recent inspection; much work has been done, but there is still lots to do. I understand that parents would like to hear about this and so there will be a Parents Evening on Friday 18th October where this will be possible. You will be able to hear from our Trustees, our new CEO, Sarah Karkeek, and myself about the areas the action plan addresses and how we intend to make swift improvements. You will also have an opportunity to share concerns and give feedback.
For my part I have really enjoyed the busy but fulfilling first weeks in my new role. Every day there are so many opportunities to see our children enjoying their days here and making steps forward in their learning.
